All You Need to Survive Being Stuck Trapped on a Winter Highway

Have you ever seen those cars trapped on a snowy highway for hours on the news? Have you ever wondered how you would survive this situation?

It’s enough to put a bit of a scare in you and make you realize how unprepared most of us are to deal with emergency road situations over the winter.

However, a little bit of preparation goes an incredibly long way.

Here are a few emergency supplies you should always keep in your car over the treacherous winter months. Hopefully, you will never need them, but you will have them if you do.

1. Battery Powered USB Charger

You need to extend your phone’s life as long as possible, without relying on your car battery.

You can pick up a fairly cheap and robust unit that will give you at least two full charges for your phone.

However, don’t keep them in your car, as the cold can drain them and render them useless when you need them. Keep one in your laptop bag or purse.

2. Jumper Cables

These don’t need to save your life to be a lifesaver.

You don’t have to be stranded on the highway for them to be useful. You can be trapped in the parking lot at Costco or the office with a dead battery. You can also be someone else’s hero for the day if you jump their car back to life.

Grab a pair and make sure you know how to use them properly.

3. Sleeping Bag

We really hope you never have to spend the night parked on a snowy highway. However, it can be good to have a sleeping bag in your trunk to keep you as warm as possible, for as long as possible.

Even if it’s just a few hours, a quality sleeping bag can make a big difference in how calm and comfortable you stay.

4. Matches and Candles

These are a source of light, with no battery required. A candle can also give off a lot more heat then you’re probably expecting.

Obviously, don’t get a scented candle because you were going to be trapped in a small space. Just get a package of dollar store candles, wood matches to light them, and something to securely prop them up on when in use.

5. Written Contact Information

In this digital age of simply saying “Siri, call Dad,” we no longer have to commit phone numbers to memory, and most of us don’t. A surprising number of people don’t actually know their significant other’s phone number. Do you?

If you’re ever in a situation where you need to contact your loved ones, but the contact list on your cell phone is not available because your phone is dead, having their numbers written on a piece of paper is huge. Now you can call them and keep them updated if a kind stranger is good enough to let you use their phone.

This is basically just a starter package for emergency situations. You can pick up these items à la cart, or you can buy an emergency kit online or at most department/hardware stores.
