The MET Gala was born out of a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City and has grown to become “fashion’s biggest night out”.
Of course, celebrities capture most of the attention, but the Gala also features up and coming creatives and established designers.
Besides raising money, the MET Gala allows the fashion savvy to exercise their creativity and come up with outstanding, outrageous, kooky and gossip worthy fashions. This year’s theme was based on the idea of Camp.
Here are our six MET Gala 2019 highlights:
1. Lady Gaga
Could there be any kind of fashion extravaganza without Lady Gaga? She wore Brandon Maxwell and Tiffany & Co. jewelry. Her hot pink gown had such a massive train it had to be held by five umbrella wielding men.
Not content to merely make one statement, Gaga proceeded to do four live costume changes!
2. Harry Styles and Alessandro Michele
Singer Harry Styles and Alessandro Michele, designer director for Gucci, walked the carpet together and both wore Gucci. Both also defied convention by wearing genderless suits, Styles in black and Michele in pink. The top of Styles’ suit was sheer, had lace at the cuffs, and a large bow around the neck. Michele took it further, with bow flounces cascading down his chest. Beautiful!
3. Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian
Williams the tennis star held her own among the fashion glitterati, with her husband Ohanian.
Williams wore Versace and De Grisogono jewelry. The gown was neon yellow, with strong shoulders and pink leaf applique with a train that flowed behind her.
Under the gown was a surprise. Sporty yellow sneakers from Virgil Abloh.
4. Jared Leto
The blood red shade of Leto’s long turtleneck Gucci dress would usually be enough to garner lots of attention, along with the fact that he was wearing a dress. The dangling crystal harness that hung around his chest and shoulders was something to catch the eye, as well. But the severed head of himself took the cake!
5. Billy Porter
Sometimes you have more to say than an outfit can possibly say. That is when you have to make an entrance, like Billy Porter did.
He was carried in, reclining, on a litter borne by six bare-chested attendants.
He wore a resplendent golden costume, featuring large golden wings reminiscent of the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis.
His look was pure gold.
6. Jordan Roth
Jordan Roth was stunning in his Iris van Herpen floor-length cape. This luxurious printed cape featured enough fabric to have a radius as tall as Roth himself.
In keeping with the style, creativity and vison of this theatre producer, the cape featured a proscenium, which is the arch framing the opening between a stage and an auditorium.
When Roth had his arms at his sides, the curtains of the theatre on his cape was closed. When he raised his arms and spread them, they were open, making Roth’s outfit decidedly theatrical!
Those who hoped to see camp were not disappointed!
