Merino Wool

All the Benefits of Merino Wool

Have you heard about this amazing fabric? Maybe your friends have talked about how great it is, but you’ve never really found out what it is, where it comes from, or why it’s so effective at regulating your temperature.

Origins of Merino Wool

Merino wool is a natural fiber grown by Merino sheep. The sheep were first bred in 12th century Spain, and by the 16th century it was instrumental to the country’s economic development. Due to how important these high-quality sheep were, exporting them out of the country was considered a capital crime until the 1700s.

Today they can be found across the world, but most of the industry is based in Australia and New Zealand, where the sheep first came to prominence in the 19th century. The Peppin Brothers were instrumental in building Australia’s wool industry. They imported a ram named Emperor who would have an outsized influence on the genetic development of what would become known as the Peppin Merino.

What Is Merino Wool?

The fineness of wool is determined by the diameter of a hair, measured in microns. A smaller diameter means a finer material. While a coarse material might be 40 microns in diameter or more, Merino starts at around 24 microns and can be as low as 15, creating an incredible fine material that’s highly prized in wool socks, hats, gloves, shirts, and just about any outdoor gear.

Benefits of Using Merino Wool

The wool is thinner and softer than regular wool. Wearing this type of material is comfortable for skin and temperature regulation, too. There are a few things you get out of this material that other wools or synthetic fabrics just can’t provide:

  • Superior moisture wicking, meaning it wicks away sweat better than other fabrics.
  • Temperature regulation that will keep you insulated and warm during cold weather or brisk, damp mornings, while also keeping you ventilated and dry in the summer weather.
  • Breathability; it’s a fabric often used in outdoor sports garments because you want air to be able to pass through the clothing freely and easily.
  • Superior warmth relative to weight; it’s a light-weight fabric that works great for hiking.

These benefits make it the ideal material for all your outdoor needs, whether you’re a hiker, camper, cyclist, skier, or even if you just can’t stand being cold in your morning commute. Merino wool socks are great for camping and all kinds of outdoor adventures.

Is Merino a Durable Material?

When it comes to socks, there’s proof that this can be a durable fabric. One of the advantages socks have over other garments is that they do require nylon or other synthetics blends to keep their form, providing some extra durability. Look for high-density knitting and innovative knitting techniques that provide greater durability to the fabric.

When it comes to your outdoor adventures, few fabrics can beat the warmth, breathability, and temperature regulation of Merino Wool. Check it out today.
